Occupational Health & Safety Management System: The Commissioners of Irish Lights (CIL), Harbour Road, Dun Laoghaire are the General Lighthouse Authority for the whole of Ireland, its adjacent seas and islands. Their main premises are located at Dun Laoghaire and they have responsibility for the Health & Safety not only for the Dun Laoghaire premises but for all of the lighthouses around the country.

The Requirements

A key deliverable was the need to provide a workable safety management system that would stand up to scrutiny nationally and internationally. In consultation and following on from OHSS advice, it was decided that the most effective way to manage health and safety risks was to implement an Occupational Health & Safety Management system mirroring the requirements of OHSAS 18001 as these systems give a basis and sound foundation to the management of risk.

The Results

Working closely with CIL Management , OHSS developed policies and procedures along with site specific risk assessments for lighthouses, all places of works and activities undertaken by CIL. This work took place over a period of 4 months and the system is in the process of being rolled out countrywide.
