Asbestos News : Contractor Jailed & Fined $94,000 for Cleanup

At OHSS, we’re always creating blogs like this one to bring you advice, guidance and news about asbestos abatement matters. Today we’re bringing you a story that highlights the fact that not everyone fully understands or abides by the very necessary rules that govern asbestos disposal and removal.

The article comes from Wisconsin in the US, as a self-employed contractor has been given harsh penalties after placing people’s lives at risk through improper asbestos disposal. The man in question is Lloyd Robi who admitted in court to carrying out unlicensed and improper disposal of asbestos containing materials (ACMs).

A Heavy Personal & Financial Penalty
The offence involved the perpetrator knowingly burning ACMs in piles in his home back yard, releasing asbestos particles into the air as he did. For this, Mr Robi was jailed for 12 years and ordered to pay $94,000 in restitution for the necessary asbestos surveys and clean up to be properly conducted.

This flagrant flouting of official asbestos regulations would either point to a lack of knowledge, professional diligence or proper care. However, regardless of motive, anyone in the vicinity is now facing the very real possibility of mesothelioma - an aggressive form of lung cancer - later in life.

Asbestos still represents the biggest workplace killer in existence and the sooner everybody grasp its lethal nature, the sooner unnecessary deaths can be prevented. While this is not the first case we’ve seen of this kind, it’s unfortunately not likely to be the last. The struggle continues.
