Asbestos - The Silent Killer That Lays Dormant for 40 Years+

After being banned from construction back at the end of the 20th century, you'd be forgiven for thinking that asbestos is something that only affected people in the past. Sadly, that's not the case, with 76 people dying from asbestos-related issues in Ireland in 2021 alone. 

This is largely because of the fact that it's a substance that still exists in many of the buildings in Ireland built pre-2000. As such, it's so important that awareness of correct asbestos removal and disposal is shared by everyone across the country.

Too Many News Stories to Mention 
Look at the news over the last few years, and you'll see countless stories about people who've been affected by the dangerous material. For example, Jim O’Dwyer, Patrick Drew and Charles Quinn are just three of the casualties caused by asbestos - illustrating just how important it is that asbestos regulations are adhered to. 

It appears that rather than going down, the number of asbestos deaths in Ireland is actually increasing - due to the fact that many were exposed to the substance and its mesothelioma-causing fibres before 1980. 

It's Common Not to Know You Have It 
The problem that many people face when it comes to cancers caused by asbestos is that the person is often completely unaware there is a problem until it develops many years later. Typically speaking, studies show that it can take 20, 30 or even 40 years to develop - leaving patients confused about what has caused the problem. 

This huge lag between exposure and cancer diagnosis is a big problem that can only be addressed by awareness of the problem.
