If you find yourself in the position that you’ve discovered asbestos either in your home or at your workplace, it’s important that you instantly understand the gravity of the situation. Asbestos is an insidious, dangerous material that when disturbed can unleash millions of deadly particles into the air that can cause a particularly aggressive type of lung cancer called mesothelioma.
If you have any suspicion that there may be asbestos present in your property, the most important thing to do is to talk to a properly qualified, accredited asbestos expert and arrange an asbestos survey to fully understand the extent of risk. It may be that the best course of action is to leave the asbestos undisturbed, but under no circumstances should you attempt to remove it yourself or allow someone unqualified to perform the removal.
Professional Removal
If the asbestos survey establishes that the Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) needs to be removed, then an appropriately qualified asbestos removal professional should be employed to carry out the procedure. There are many asbestos regulations that exist to ensure the safety of people in buildings across Ireland and failure to comply with them puts lives at risk and exposes those involved to potential lawsuits many years down the line.
Still a Widespread Problem
There’s a common misconception that asbestos is a paradigm of the past and that it no longer represents a risk. Even though it was completely banned from use in construction in 1999, there is still a vast amount of asbestos remaining in many residential and business properties that were built before the ban came into force. There are more than enough new cases coming through our doors at OHSS Safety Consultants to keep us busy for years to come.
