At OHSS Safety Consultants, we have been providing occupational hygiene and asbestos abatement management services to Irish businesses since 2001 and we like to keep up with global asbestos news. Today we look at the fact that whilst strict asbestos regulations exist in many countries, there are many others around the world - including the USA - that continues to lag behind the rest.
How to Achieve it
A recent study into the subject has highlighted that if a complete ban on the use of asbestos around the world is to be achieved - and mesothelioma eradicated with it - there are two main things will need to be implemented before it does. The first factor in this equation is the need for strong governments who are determined enough to implement a ban on asbestos use in manufacturing and introduce stricter rules on asbestos removal and disposal.
The second factor is the need for guidelines set down in two major international C162 asbestos conventions from the 1980s. These asbestos guidelines deal with:
Banning the spraying of products with asbestos
Banning the use of crocidolite
Reviewing national guidelines of asbestos exposure limits
The introduction of rules regarding asbestos disposal
These guidelines have been in place in Ireland and much of Europe for many years already, but surprisingly they’re not as yet being adhered to in other parts of the world, putting many people at risk of developing the horrible disease that is mesothelioma. Will a global ban on asbestos be implement in the next few years? Only time will tell.
