Air Quality Monitoring & Its Importance Workplace Health

When it comes to health and safety in work, air quality plays a very important part. This vital occupational safety factor has, however, been brought into even sharper focus since the emergence of Covid-19. Good air quality is key to workplace health and safety, with both HVAC and natural ventilation systems used to control it.

While the worst of the pandemic seems to be behind us, workplace risk assessments routinely focus this area, amongst many others. This ensures that correct procedures are in place to limit exposure to Covid-19, as well as to provide the optimum levels of good quality air that everyone needs for good health.

How OHSS Can Assist
In order to remain compliant with health and occupational safety, businesses in Ireland are required to monitor and report on the indoor air quality in the workplace. This then needs to be backed by the implementation of measures designed to control and preserve clean air quality.

The OHSS team can support you in the designing of an effective monitoring program, as well as testing the air for any substances in existence that might present a risk to safety in the workplace. As part of our role, we will:

  • Estimate the extent of your poor air quality issue

  • Sample and test the air in the vicinity

  • Conducting of on-site monitoring

  • Providing a report and recommendation of solutions

Common issues often found by our team include HVAC issues, relative humidity, high carbon dioxide levels, mould or other biological contaminants, air temperature/velocity, dust or vapours created by work such as soldering. Indications of poor indoor air quality can be subtle.

They include eye/nose/throat irritation, respiratory issues like asthma/coughs/wheezing, headaches/dizziness/nausea or mental fatigue & headaches. If your staff are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s time to act.
