Asbestos Exposure in Ireland: Still a Very Real Threat

Given that asbestos was banned from Irish construction more than 25 years ago, you’d be forgiven for assuming that it was no longer a problem in the modern day. However, that’s not the case, as asbestos exposure continues to represent a major threat to health and, indeed, life in the 2020s.

Evidence of this can be seen in a recent news story about the Dublin Garda station closure, which shows that the dangers of asbestos still loom large.

The Dublin Garda Station Closure: What Happened?

While full details are yet to emerge, the closure of this public office was over concerns of asbestos exposure. They were raised during an inspection that determined there was a possibility that this potentially cancer-causing substance had been disturbed - although it is not known how.

As such, the possibility arose that asbestos fibers may have been present in the air, posing a potential health risk to Gardaí, staff, and the public.

Further Investigations to Occur

Following the closure, investigations will likely determine whether asbestos fibers were indeed present and if any exposure occurred. If so, affected individuals may require medical monitoring, and further remediation work will be necessary to ensure the building is safe for reoccupation.

This incident also raises broader questions about asbestos management in Ireland, particularly in public buildings. Are enough precautionary measures being taken to identify and remove asbestos safely? How many other government facilities might contain ACMs that pose a hidden threat?

A Wake-Up Call for Asbestos Vigilance

The closure of a Dublin Garda station due to asbestos fears serves as a stark reminder that Ireland is still dealing with the legacy of asbestos use. While its use has been banned for over 25 years, its presence in older buildings continues to pose a health risk to many people across the country.
