Asbestos in Irish Buildings: Why It's Still a Threat

Asbestos, a once hugely prevalent material in the Irish construction industry, remains a hidden threat in many buildings across the country. Despite its banning at the end of the 20th century, certain dangerous myths are still in circulation - something that undermines public safety.

In this article, we look at these myths to provide some much-needed clarity. Our aim is to address them and boost awareness in this crucial health and environmental safety sphere.

Myth 1: Asbestos is Only Dangerous in Industrial Settings

A common misconception is that asbestos poses risks only in industrial environments where it was heavily used. The truth is that the material was also extensively used in residential buildings, schools, and offices for insulation, flooring, and roofing.

The danger lies not in the setting but in the disturbance of asbestos-containing materials, which can release harmful fibres into the air.

Myth 2: Modern Buildings are Asbestos-Free

Many assume that modern buildings are completely free from asbestos. While its use has significantly declined since the turn of the century, some buildings constructed or renovated before the ban may still contain it, with vinyl tiles, cement sheets, and insulation products among the areas in which it's possible.

Myth 3: Wearing Masks is Enough for Safe Asbestos Removal

Another dangerous falsehood is that a simple mask offers enough protection during asbestos removal works. Safe removal requires comprehensive safety measures, including specialised respirators, protective clothing, and strict containment procedures to prevent fibre release.

Complacency Is Not an Option Around Asbestos

Being aware of these myths is essential in combatting the complacency that has no place when dealing with asbestos. Awareness, education, and adherence to the existing regulations are critical in mitigating the dangers the material presents.
