The work done by asbestos abatement companies is centred around protecting people from exposure to the invisible fibres known to cause mesothelioma - an aggressive kind of lung cancer. It’s diagnosis is still considered to be something of a death sentence, with no known cure available, but could that be about to change?
Thousands each year are exposed to the material’s deadly effects because of improper asbestos removal and disposal, with the issue sometimes lying dormant in the body for decades. However, thanks to research carried out by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a novel therapy could represent something of a breakthrough.
A Spray-On Nanoparticle Hydrogel
According to reports, the new treatment comes in the form of a spray-on hydrogel that contains genetically-engineered nanoparticles that are able to identify and eliminate cancerous cells. During the NCI’s trials, it has shown remarkable results in ridding the body of tumour cells that aren’t dealt with by surgery.
NCI thoracic surgeon Doctor Chuong Hang did not hesitate to express how thrilled he was with this development, saying “This could be a huge deal and potentially, a real game-changer in treating this disease. I’m excited by what we’ve seen so far”.
It’s believed that this new-wave therapy could be employed along with traditional surgery, targeting the microscopic tumour cells that sometimes evade detection and a recurrence of the disease. A real-life cure for a disease that kills thousands every year could be within touching distance.
