Asbestos News: What the New EU Directive Means for Irish Workplaces

Even though asbestos was banned from construction decades ago, it hasn’t disappeared from our buildings—or from the list of serious workplace hazards. In fact, the EU has just updated its rules on how employers across Europe must handle exposure to asbestos at work. And for businesses in Ireland, this means change is coming.

New Rules, Stricter Standards

Under the updated asbestos regulations—Directive (EU) 2023/2668—employers will be required to meet much tougher standards when it comes to occupational safety and protecting workers from airborne asbestos fibres.

The new limit for asbestos exposure has been cut by 90%, meaning workplaces will now have to reduce airborne fibres to almost undetectable levels. More sensitive lab equipment will soon be required for proper testing, and every effort must be made to identify asbestos before any building or demolition work begins.

What Employers Need to Do

This isn’t just a paperwork exercise. If you’re an employer or duty holder, this will likely mean reviewing your workplace risk assessments, updating your workplace safety protocols, and possibly reassessing older buildings through updated asbestos surveys.

Any asbestos removal and disposal must still be handled by licensed asbestos companies, but now the focus is even more sharply on Occupational Hygiene, worker protection, and detailed record-keeping.

Employers will also be expected to offer improved training, regular health checks, and proper PPE for anyone at risk of exposure. If you’re unsure where your current systems stand, it’s a good time to get expert support from experienced health and safety consultants.

The Deadline Is Closer Than It Sounds

Ireland and all other EU countries must bring these new rules into national law by December 2025, with full technical changes due by 2029. That gives employers time, but not forever. Early action will avoid rushed decisions, missed deadlines, and potential fines down the line.
