Asbestos Removal at Former Cork Piggery Highlights Ongoing Safety Concerns

Demolition work on a long-abandoned piggery outside Cork was paused earlier this year after asbestos sheeting was discovered among the old roof panels. The site, earmarked for redevelopment, had to be sealed off while licensed contractors carried out controlled asbestos removal and disposal.

The incident represents another indicator of how often asbestos can still be found in farm and industrial buildings across Ireland. Even decades after its ban, it remains one of the country’s most stubborn workplace hazards.

Why is Asbestos Still a Concern in Ireland?

Asbestos isn’t dangerous when it’s solid and undisturbed. The risk comes when it’s damaged and those fine fibres go airborne. Once inhaled, they can lead to serious illnesses like asbestosis and mesothelioma years later.

While it hasn’t been used in Irish construction since the late 1990s, it’s still present in homes and business premises built before the ban. As such, for anyone involved in demolition or renovation, both an asbestos survey and a workplace risk assessment exist for protection.

Managing the Job Safely

Irish safety regulations are strict on this. Only those trained in asbestos removal can legally handle or dispose of the material. What’s more, every site must keep detailed records from start to finish.

At the Cork site from the news story, the asbestos sheets were taken out under negative-pressure containment and moved to an authorised waste facility. It’s part of a controlled process that keeps everyone safe.

Anyone planning similar work on an older property needs to think the same way.

  • Get a qualified asbestos surveyor to inspect before work starts

  • Keep a register of any asbestos found

  • Plan for secure asbestos disposal through approved channels

  • Record everything for workplace health and safety compliance

Skipping those steps risks fines, delays, and puts people’s health in danger.
