If you work in the construction industry, it is important for you to understand the process of remove asbestos from a construction site and the importance of adhering to this process. Asbestos is a dangerous substance, especially after it is removed or disturbed.
Before any work begins on the construction site, an asbestos survey must be conducted. This type of survey involves aggressive techniques like pulling up flooring and making holes in walls. All asbestos must be removed from the area before construction begins, so this type of survey isn’t concerned with the condition of the asbestos.
After the survey is completed, the asbestos must be removed before any construction begins. If the construction is to take place in a certain area, the asbestos must be removed from that area. If the whole building is undergoing construction, then all of the asbestos must be removed. The asbestos must also be removed in cases of demolition unless the building is unsafe.
Only those properly trained and certified should remove the asbestos from the building. Once the asbestos has been removed from the building, it must be properly labelled and contained. How this is done will depend on the amount and type of asbestos to be removed. Small amounts of asbestos can be placed into sealed bags. Larger quantities will need to be placed into a sealed and locked skip. Any asbestos containers must be properly labelled.
Once it is properly labelled and stored, it must be disposed of at a licensed waste disposal site. The waste must be transported in keeping with the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
This process must be carried out in keeping with all rules and regulations regarding asbestos. If you suspect your construction site contains asbestos, we can help with everything from surveying the site for asbestos to removing and disposing of the materials.
