Court Awards €370,000 to Family of Man Who Died From Mesothelioma

At OHSS, we have been protecting Ireland from the dangers of asbestos exposure since 2001. From asbestos surveys to air monitoring, our services ensure that people in the vicinity of this deadly substance are safe and protected.

Today, however, we’re here to tell you about some asbestos-related news that demonstrates the danger that the material still presents. It’s a story of a man from Tipperary who worked for the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) and sadly succumbed to the aggressive cancer that is mesothelioma.

James Noonan, Publican & ESB Employee
As someone who also worked as a publican in Co Tipperary, James Noonan was allegedly exposed to asbestos when employed by the ESB. Because of this, he later developed lung cancer, a condition that he died from.

As such, his widow - Patricia Noonan - sued the ESB over her husband’s death on June 7th 2019, which lead to the High Court awarding over €370,000. Presided over by Mr Justice Garrett Simons, it was a sum that was approved after an assessment by the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB).

When Mr Noonan died, he was 69 years of age, and it’s tragedies like these that serve to illustrate the importance of following asbestos regulations whenever in the presence of this common workplace killer.
