Do You Know the Occupational Health Risks of Silica Dust?

If you run a construction, quarrying, or manufacturing business in Ireland, silica dust is a serious and often underestimated occupational health risk. However, the dangers it poses aren’t limited solely to the health of your staff, as failure to protect them from exposure can land you in serious legal trouble.

Where is silica found? It’s in concrete, brick, stone, and mortar, and when it’s cut or drilled, crystalline silica (RCS) dust is released into the air. These airborne particles can’t be seen by the naked eye, but that doesn’t stop them from penetrating deeply into and damaging the lungs.

Health Risks and Employer Responsibility

So, what are the health risks? Well, long-term exposure to silica dust can lead to diseases like silicosis, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These are not short-term injuries. Rather, they’re illnesses that can take years to develop, and when they do, they’re irreversible.

Under Ireland’s Health and Safety in Work Act, employers are required to assess and control risks from all hazardous substances. That means if your business involves activities like stonecutting, demolition, or abrasive blasting, the appropriate exposure controls must be introduced to ensure your team is protected.

Managing Silica Dust in the Workplace

Effective management begins with identifying where exposure is likely to occur. In reality, that means ensuring that adequate ventilation is always provided, and that employees are given the correct respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and receive regular health surveillance throughout ongoing exposure.

Relying on visual checks alone isn’t enough, as silica dust can be present in levels that exceed occupational safety exposure limits without actually being visible in the air. That’s why a professional risk assessment is essential.
