Explaining Why Safe Asbestos Removal is a Must

For over 20 years, OHSS has been working hard to protect people from the hazards presented by asbestos. Our experts are able to guide you when asbestos surveys, asbestos monitoring and asbestos removal and disposal are required.

According to the WHO, to this day, asbestos is still killing just under ¼ million people annually, due in part, to the fact that it’s not something that’s banned everywhere. Even in the countries where it has, it still remains in older buildings, so it still presents significant danger.

Why Asbestos Removal Has to Be Done Correctly

When a tradesperson unwittingly disturbs asbestos during the course of their work, microscopic fibres are released, which when inhaled can lead to mesothelioma, asbestosis and other unpleasant, life-threatening illness.

By failing to adhere to the strict guidelines for safe asbestos removal and disposal, everyone in or near the building is at risk. It only takes one of the aforementioned fibres to be inhaled for serious problems to occur and while the true damage may not be seen for years, it’s still there.

What Can Business Owners Do to Eliminate Exposure?

The first thing is to be aware of the dangers that exist and then develop a strategy for asbestos removal when it is identified. This involves committing to managing the risks and eliminating them entirely wherever possible.

An asbestos survey is a step you can take to identify whether asbestos exists in your building and what type it is. These findings should then be recorded for future reference, followed by a risk assessment to determine how employees are interacting with it and what dangers this presents.

Finally, you should be looking to create a management plan that comes into force when asbestos is found in the workplace. Training for all staff in what to do forms part of the process, as everyone needs to be aware of it and know how to spot asbestos.
