New Canadian Asbestos Regulations Come Into Force at the End of 2018

At OHSS Safety Consultants, since 2001, we have been helping businesses across Ireland to avoid the inherent risk that is posed by the presence of asbestos in buildings that were built before the ban came into place. As part of our mission to raise awareness about the importance of involving asbestos companies in asbestos removal, we regularly bring you items from the media about the subject.

This time, the article we bring to you comes from Canada, where new asbestos regulations have come into force as of the 1st of January 2019, explicitly banning the use of asbestos in any kind of manufacturing. The move comes as part of a 2016 government directive to protect Canadian citizens from the danger of exposure to the substance that’s known to cause mesothelioma, an aggressive form of lung cancer.

Mining of asbestos continued in Canada up until 2011, but as awareness as to the full extent of the damage caused by asbestos fibre inhalation has increased, governments around the world have moved to protect people from the dangers it presents.

Asbestos abatement remains a hot topic, as the effects caused by the issue that many believed had been dealt with when it was banned in many countries around the world at the end of the 90s, continues to rear its head. It was a widely used building material for decades beforehand, meaning that it still exists in millions of homes and office buildings around the world. The need for professional asbestos removal and disposal services has never been greater than it is today.
