OHSS Asbestos News - Asbestos Regulations Tightened on P.E.I.

At OHSS Safety Consultants, we are on a mission to educate businesses and individuals about the dangers involved in incorrect and unregulated asbestos removal and disposal. As part of that mission, we let our readers know all about what’s happening in the world with regards to what’s being done to minimise the damage the substance does to people’s lives.

As is well documented, asbestos causes an aggressive lung cancer known as mesothelioma, which at this moment in time, has no known cure. And in a move to ensure that the numbers of those affected by improper asbestos removal are kept to a minimum, the asbestos regulations on Prince Edward Island in Canada have been tightened.

The Workers’ Compensation Board

The new, stricter guidelines deal with asbestos removal, asbestos surveys and asbestos abatement for contractors working on demolition and renovation and Canada has also banned both the production and sale of the once-common deadly building material.

The new rules include:

  • Improved medical surveillance for those involved in asbestos abatement

  • New guidelines governing ventilation levels

  • Contractor certification expiration

  • Sampling of the air outside the work area required on a daily basis

  • Amended definitions for ACMs (Asbestos Containing Materials)

With these new rules in place, contractors will be less likely to be exposed to airborne asbestos fibres which still exist in so many buildings built before the turn of the century.
