Asbestos represents a very real danger to those in close proximity to it, as when it’s disturbed, harmful fibres can become released into the air. When inhaled, these fibres are a known cause of mesothelioma, a very aggressive form of lung cancer that often results in death.
As recently as 1999, asbestos was still a commonly utilised material in the construction industry, due to its fireproofing and insulation qualities. This means that many buildings still in use today are likely to have this hazardous material contained somewhere within their structures and that you should make contact with professional asbestos surveyors or asbestos removal professionals if you think that it may be present in your property.
Caution
If you are the owner of a business premises that was built prior to 1999 and are about have building work done, asbestos regulations state that you should have an asbestos survey performed. This is carried out in part to comply with asbestos regulations, but mostly to protect employees in around the building from airborne asbestos particles that can become present if asbestos is encountered during the building works.
Maintaining
In some cases, asbestos removal can be eschewed in favour of maintaining the substance in situ, as its might be be deemed a safer course of action. This decision will only be made after careful analysis of the data that is provided by a thorough asbestos risk assessment. If this is course taken, then the asbestos must be repaired (if necessary), maintained and clearly marked for future reference.
