Overlooked Health and Safety Issues on Construction Sites

Construction sites have lots of potential hazards. However, you can greatly reduce the risks to yourself and your employees by being aware of potential health and safety issues on construction sites, and knowing what you can do to minimise or eliminate these risks.

Vibrational Noise

The health risks of excessive levels of vibration and noise should never be overlooked on construction sites. High levels of noise can cause permanent hearing loss, and high levels of vibration can damage the nervous and vascular systems. These risks can be mitigated with a vibrational analysis and noise measurement assessment. The assessment will identify any potential hazards and help you implement the necessary safety precautions.

Slips, Trips, and Falls

Slips, trips, and falls can sometimes be overlooked risks on a construction site. They may seem like a minor problem, but it is extremely common for workers to suffer a broken bone or a dislocated joint do to a slip and fall on a construction site.

One cause of slips and falls are slippery surfaces. Areas that are known to be slippery should be treated frequently with stone or grit if the condition cannot be prevented. Obstacles such as hoses and cables are another frequent culprit. When possible, these should be stored overhead instead of underfoot. Any area that workers use as a walkway should be well lit so that they can see where they are going. Good housekeeping and paying attention to one’s surroundings are everyone’s job, and can also eliminate many slip and fall accidents.

Air Quality

Air quality is another issue that must be given proper consideration. Air quality can become poor from dirt and debris in the air, pollution, the use of chemicals, and air contaminants like asbestos. Air quality monitoring can let you know if the air your employees are breathing poses any health risks. If there are any issues with air quality, personal protective equipment can be recommended to keep your employees safe and healthy.
