Protecting Workers From The Dangers Presented By Asbestos

Despite being widely banned at the end of the 20th century, asbestos remains an ongoing threat to public health, largely because much of the substance still remains in the many buildings created before it became outlawed. That’s why asbestos regulations exist in Ireland to protect workers from the associated risks from working near the substance.

Applicable to all industrial workplaces in Ireland and enforced by the Health & Safety Authority (HSA) specific regulations exist, ensuring the proper protection is provided, as well as measures designed to minimise risk. It’s the responsibility of employers to protect any staff that work in any environment that may cause Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs), with a range of steps required.

A Range of Measures Need to Be Implemented by Employers

When there’s a possibility that there may be ACMs in the workplace in questions, the steps required to protect personnel include:

  • Identifying ACMs prior to work commencing, with a written plan for a minimum disturbance of the substance

  • Asbestos surveys and written risk assessments provided, with a written method statement and plan of work

  • Employees must be informed of any potential airborne asbestos dust in any work area

  • Everything possible must be done to keep asbestos dust to a minimum, in addition to preventing employees from being exposed to it

  • Specialist contractors must be brought in for any work with a significant risk of exposure

  • Suitable controls must be used , such as decontamination units and dust extractors

  • Appropriate protective gear must be supplied for the work type and the asbestos fibre levels in the air

  • Information must be provided as per asbestos regulations through training and instruction as to the risks involved and any precautions that need to be taken.

  • Asbestos removal and disposal must be conducted in line in a proper fashion

It’s imperative to adhere to all the above asbestos guidelines, as any company not following all these rules, including those involved in asbestos removal risks heavy fines.
