The 2021 ADAO Asbestos Awareness Conference

At OHSS, we are the foremost providers of asbestos training and monitoring services in Ireland and today we’re here to tell you about the 16th Annual International Awareness Prevention Conference that was held over the 17th and 18th of September this year.

Featuring 40 main speakers from 7 different countries, in addition to the inaugural Art, Advocacy & Share Stories Film Festival, it was a free virtual event that only required attendees to register online. The main aim of the conference - as the name suggests - was to raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos.

The 2021 Theme -  “Where Knowledge & Action Unite”
Among the speakers, there were environmental experts, lawmakers, journalists, medical specialists and survivors of mesothelioma - the aggressive cancer that asbestos exposure is known to cause.

Linda Reinstein, ADAO’s co-founder and president had this to say about the event: This is a conference for everyone, not just the medical community.“It’s a one-stop shop to really immerse yourself in, to find the best information on prevention, treatment and action.

The aforementioned film festival took place on Friday and screened a number of asbestos-related movies to include ‘Breathless’ by Daniel Lambo, ‘The Mother’ by Paolo Monico and ‘Dirty Laundry’ by Zack Johnson and Conor Lewis.

The following day saw four in-depth panel discussions featuring experts and survivors of mesothelioma, with each one covering:

  • Session 1 - Progress and Challenges from the Frontline

  • Session 2 - Medical Advancements: Diagnosing and Treating Mesothelioma and Asbestos-Related Diseases

  • Session 3 - Prevention: What is it? Where Is It? What Do I Do?

  • Session 4 - Advocacy: Global Ban Asbestos Action

A great deal of good work happened over the two days of the conference - something that has been running since 2004. The ultimate aim of the conference is to save lives, by preventing exposure and completely eliminating what has come to be known as ‘asbestos disease’.
