Types of Asbestos Surveys in Ireland

There are two predominant kinds of asbestos survey: the Management Asbestos Surveys (MAS) and the Refurbishment/Demolition Asbestos Surveys (RDAS).

First is the Management Asbestos Survey, which is a search to locate Asbestos Containing Materials within a given facility or building. This surveys is to establish whether there is asbestos present, and if there is, what kind of asbestos is present. Areas not examined should be considered “infected” with asbestos, though the type clearly cannot be discerned at this point in the survey. Assuming an area is infected with asbestos means that analysis can be delayed; however, this means that ACMs that aren’t present will still be accounted for.

Next is the Refurbishment/Demolition Asbestos Survey. This survey is similar to the Management Asbestos Survey in that it is used to identify the presence or absence of asbestos and its type if it exists; however, one key difference is the use of destructive inspection, which requires a  search of the entire premises for the presence of asbestos. This survey is used most often to locate Asbestos Containing Materials for removal before a facility is refurbished or demolished, in order to assure the safety of the workers who would participate in the refurbishment or demolition.
