What Happens When Asbestos is Repaired & Not Removed?

We've been protecting Irish businesses from the ever-present danger of asbestos that still lurks in buildings across the country since 2001. Providing advice and guidance for all your workplace Health and Safety management plans, the OHSS team is on hand to ensure that any asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are controlled and managed safely.

In this article, we look at the fact that asbestos removal and disposal is not always the chosen path when the substance is encountered. Sometimes, a different route is taken if it's deemed to be a safer option for the situation in question.

Repair & Maintenance Is Sometimes the Best Choice

On many occasions, the most appropriate way to deal with asbestos is to remove it in a controlled manner, with asbestos monitoring conducted throughout. However, there are some instances when a competent and qualified person would make the decision to repair and maintain the hazardous substance on site rather than remove it.

When that happens, it needs to be maintained in a safe manner and labelled in an obvious way. The location of the asbestos must also be clearly marked on building plans so as to ensure that any future renovation, maintenance or demolition plans take its presence into account and take the appropriate actions.

It's worth reiterating that any decision relating to the management of asbestos, either in a residential or business setting, should only ever be made by a suitably qualified professional. If you come across anything that looks like asbestos, seek expert assistance.
